Abstract
Some believe that Mullā Ṣadrā insists on proving the substantial movement (al-ḥarakat al-juharīyyah) through how the constant and the changing relate to each other more than any other proof: If the moving substance is not related between the constant and the changing, no other thing can be related between them. So, the substantial movement exists. The growing block version of Four–Dimensionalism and static Eternalism are sometimes proposed in this direction as well. Such claims are comprehensively evaluated and criticized in this paper: we will, using the historical method, collect the criticisms scattered throughout history and analyze them using the philosophical method and logical tools and then suggest our own criticisms. The conclusion is that we will show for various reasons that none of the above-mentioned claims are acceptable eventually. For example, if the above-mentioned proof of the substantial movement is accepted, the constant and changing problem emerges in another place again – in particular in the fact that the accidental movement can be related between the constant and the changing – and the current defenses of the proponents finally cannot be acceptable as well. In addition, we show that Muṭahharī’s growing block and Jawādī Āmulī’s Eternalism are inconsistent with their own other words. Because, they have sometimes explicitly denied to exist any constant thing in the moving material universe and any coexistence between the temporal parts.
